FINISHES

Here at Dickinson Hardwood we pride ourselves on only using the very best products available. Thanks to new technology, today's finishes are ECO-friendly, quick-drying and more durable than ever before.

Water-based Advantages

Natural Durability with Clear Benefits

Clear Color to Show Off Your Hardwood

When you open a can of water-based finish and one of oil-based finish, you don't need long to spot (or smell) the difference. Water-based finishes have a milky look while oil-based finishes are much darker. Both finishes give the floor a nice sheen, but water-based finishes have a clear, natural look. Even if you want to keep the natural colors of your hardwood, a water-based coating does just that.

Fewer Chemicals

Wood floor finishes have volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs. During the application process and for some time afterward, the finish sends these VOCs into the air, harming the environment. Long-term exposure to and inhalation of VOCs can also cause health problems. Finish manufacturers work hard to ensure both water- and oil-based finishes have safe levels of VOCs. However, since water-based wood floor finishes have far fewer VOCs than oil-based ones, they're the safer option. Water-based finishes also lack the strong odor of oil-based finishes.

Shorter Drying Time

Oil-based finishes take much longer to dry than water-based ones. The drying times of oil-based finishes vary heavily depending on the manufacturer, but the standard duration is between eight and 20 hours while water-based finishes dry in an hour or two. Water-based and oil-based finishes both form a protective layer over your hardwood and enhance its appearance for years to come, but water-based finishes give you most of the benefits of oil-based ones without the drawbacks, making them the better choice.

Janka Hardness Scale

The Janka Hardness Scale determines the hardness of a particular type of wood over another. The scale was invented in 1906 by Gabriel Janka, an Austrian wood researcher, and standardized in 1927 by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Depending on the room where the flooring will be installed, a certain level of hardness may make it a more desirable choice. Generally speaking, the higher the number on the scale, the harder and more scratch resistant a wood is.
